Moving to Sacramento? Your First-Renter Checklist

Everything to line up before you sign a lease

Whether you're new to Sacramento or renting your very first apartment, a little preparation makes the whole process smoother. Here's a checklist to work through before you sign.

  1. Set your real budget. A common rule of thumb is to keep rent around 30% of your monthly income. Don't forget utilities, parking, and renters insurance.
  2. Gather your documents. Most communities ask for photo ID, proof of income (recent pay stubs or an offer letter), and references. Having these ready speeds up approval.
  3. Tour in person. Photos help, but nothing beats walking the unit, checking closet space, water pressure, and natural light.
  4. Ask the right questions. What's included in rent? What are the parking options? Are there move-in specials? What are the office hours if you need help?
  5. Read the lease carefully. Understand the term length, deposit, and pet policy before you sign.
  6. Plan the move. Book movers or a truck early, and set up utilities and mail forwarding ahead of your move-in date.
